SEVENTH ANNUAL SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY AT THE CAPITAL

According to the Florida Department of Health, 2,570 Floridians lost their lives to suicide in 2007 at a rate of 7 people per day. Of those, 231 were between the ages of 10 and 24. Tragically, many Florida families and communities have been affected by the suicide deaths of their loved ones, friends, classmates, co-workers and neighbors. Two events are being held to address this silent epidemic. Read more.

2008 INTERIM REPORT BY FLORIDA MEDICAL EXAMINERS COMMISSION ON DRUGS IDENTIFIED IN DECEASED PERSONS REPORT

Today, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) released the Florida Medical Examiners Commission Report on Drugs Identified in Deceased Persons. The report contains information compiled from autopsies performed by medical examiners across the state from January through June 2008. During that period there were approximately 89,000 deaths in Florida. Of those, 4,055 individuals were found to have died with one or more of the drugs specified in this report in their bodies. SURVEY SHOWS FLORIDA OVERALL DRUG USE DOWN AMONG YOUTH

Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp today announced significant reductions in underage alcohol use and binge drinking, as he announced the results of the 2008 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey. The Florida Office of Drug Control, state agencies, law enforcement, substance abuse prevention coalitions, schools and community stakeholders have partnered to reduce substance abuse across the state. FLORIDA IS AWARDED $1.5 MILLION FOR YOUTH SUICIDE PREVENTION
AND EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS

The Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention and Florida Office of Drug Control are proud to announce that Florida has been awarded $1.5 million from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to support youth suicide prevention and early intervention programs. Eighteen states were awarded through the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act which provides authorization and funding for grants combating youth suicide. Read more.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum and members of the Gang Reduction Strategy Executive Committee today released their statewide gang reduction strategy, developed to address the significant threat of criminal gangs and gang violence in Florida. The strategy focuses on the three key goals of stopping the growth of gangs in Florida, reducing the number of gangs and gang members, and rendering the remaining gangs ineffectual and is built on the pillars of prevention/intervention, law enforcement, and rehabilitation and re-entry. SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Today, Governor Charlie Crist proclaimed April 8 as Suicide Prevention Day as Bill Janes, Director of the Office of Drug Control highlighted Florida’s progress in reducing the number of youth suicides. This year’s observance is the first since the creation of the Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention and a 28 member coordinating council. Read more.
Think about It! Campaign
The Florida Governor's Office of Drug Control and the Florida Department of Children and Families have partnered with Clear Channel Communications to implement a statewide multi-media educational campaign to bring awareness to youth and their parents about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This campaign utilizes radio, billboards, and the Internet as marketing tools to deliver substance abuse prevention messages to the public.
